Genital surgery for women

Genital surgery has become much more common in recent years, with reasons ranging from practical complaints to aesthetic preferences.

In recent years, the frequency of genital surgery has increased significantly and has contributed to the fact that this topic is being discussed more openly. Nevertheless, many women are still embarrassed and the inhibition threshold to see a specialist is high.

Typically, women find their elongated labia minora bothersome when wearing underwear or sportswear, but it can also cause difficulties when cycling, riding or during sexual intercourse, resulting in a loss of quality of life. On the other hand, labia reduction may also be desired purely for cosmetic reasons. The length, shape and size of the labia minora vary greatly. Most women find it aesthetically pleasing when the outer labia just cover the inner labia minora. Labia reduction is a low-risk, uncomplicated procedure with which a very high level of patient satisfaction can be achieved. However, it is also possible for the labia minora to suffer from a loss of volume. In this case, hyaluronic acid fillers or autologous fat transfer can be used to restore the lost volume of the labia minora.

  • Suitability

Patients who suffer from large labia minora or a loss of volume in the labia majora are suitable for surgery. Certain medications such as blood thinners must be discontinued before the procedure.

  • Consultation

During an initial consultation at the Clinic for Aesthetic Surgery, we will discuss the possible options and how treatment would proceed in a discreet and relaxed atmosphere. If you decide in favour of a procedure, a further consultation will follow to discuss any questions you may have and to plan the procedure.

  • Intervention

Labia reduction is usually performed under local anaesthetic, which may be supplemented by twilight sedation. Depending on the procedure, the reduction takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Hyaluronic acid fillers or autologous fat can be used to enlarge the labia minora. The fat can be harvested from the abdomen or legs, for example, and is then processed and used to restore the lost volume of the labia minora. This procedure is also usually performed under local anaesthetic or with a short period of twilight sleep.

  • Aftercare

The operation is performed on an outpatient basis. As a rule, little to no pain is to be expected after the operation, but the tissue may swell more. Wearing constricting underwear, cycling, bathing, sexual intercourse and sport should be avoided for 3 weeks. Showering is possible the day after the operation.
