Tummy tuck

Pregnancy or ageing can lead to changes in the abdomen. A tightening of the abdominal wall can counteract this.

Pregnancy, significant weight loss or simply the passage of time can lead to a significant change in the abdomen with excess skin and a lack of firmness. An abdominoplasty can tighten the abdominal wall and remove excess skin and fat at the same time.

Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to extend the procedure. If there is a significant excess of skin and fat not only in the abdominal area but also in the hip and waist area, the abdomen and waist can be tightened at the same time as part of a circumferential abdominoplasty. In this case, a longer scar extending to the back is created. The thighs and buttocks can also be affected, particularly after weight loss. In a lower body lift, the thighs and buttocks are lifted at the same time as the abdominoplasty. This procedure results in a circumferential scar.

There are basically three structures that change and can be treated: the skin, the fatty tissue and the abdominal wall with the muscles. The changes in these three structures occur in different combinations. Therefore, the first step is to analyse which structures need to be corrected in order to achieve a flawless, flat and beautiful stomach. As a rule, the muscles are ideally positioned, excess fat is removed, the abdominal wall is tightened and excess skin is removed. Patients gain self-confidence after an abdominoplasty and enjoy life again.

Overview

Patients who suffer from a lack of firmness or excess skin in the abdominal area

Duration of surgery: 2–3 hours

Office work possible after 2-3 weeks

Sport possible after 6 weeks

  • Suitability

Patients who suffer from a lack of firmness or excess skin in the abdominal area, e.g. after pregnancy or weight loss, are suitable for a tummy tuck. A good general condition is an advantage. If possible, those who wish to undergo a tummy tuck should not smoke (or should avoid smoking before the operation). Certain medications such as blood thinners must be discontinued before the operation.

  • Consultation

During an initial consultation at the Clinic for Aesthetic Surgery, we determine which components of the abdominal wall (skin, fatty tissue, abdominal muscles) are responsible for the lack of firmness. This allows us to work out a precise treatment plan together in order to achieve a beautiful result that fulfils your wishes. If you decide in favour of surgery, a further consultation will follow to discuss any questions you may have and to plan the procedure.

  • Intervention

The procedure usually takes 2 to 3 hours and is performed under anaesthetic. The length of the scar depends on the extent of the excess skin. Drains are placed to prevent the accumulation of wound secretions or blood, which can usually be removed the day after the operation.

  • Aftercare

After the procedure, you will spend the night in the clinic, where you will be closely monitored. The following morning, the drains are usually removed and the dressing changed. An abdominal belt supplied by us should be worn for 4 to 6 weeks after the operation.

Depending on your activity, you will be unable to work for 2 to 3 weeks. Sport is permitted again after 6 weeks. The swelling may last a few weeks. The final result is achieved after approx. 6 months, but a dramatic improvement is visible immediately after the operation.
